Sisterhood

The Sisterhood of Congregation L’Dor V’Dor is a dynamic Mispacha of women actively involved in enriching the congregation, synagogue, community and Eretz Yisrael. With an emphasis on love of family and community, faith in God, the Jewish people and Israel, the Sisterhood offers programs to meet the changing needs of our diverse membership. It provides an opportunity for every woman to become a more educated, highly involved, engaged and active member of the community in a setting where she can form lasting friendships. Sisterhood welcomes your participation and support.

Sisterhood provides many educational and cultural programs including:

A Monthly Book Club, Adult Education classes on Health, Bible and Judaic Studies, and Arts and Crafts projects. We conduct the Annual Women’s Mincha/Maariv service and study session, organize a Chesed Prayer Group, support a Foster Child Program, and give gift baskets for women and children in shelters for abused families. Our fund raising projects include the Annual Rummage Sale, Shalach Manot Cards for Purim.

Sisterhood decorates the bimah with flowers for Shabbat and Sukkot, sends annual Chanukah packages to our college students, gifts the kiddush cups and candlesticks to our B’nai Mitzvah, provides the utensils and paper goods for Shabbat dinners and Friday night onegs and Shabbat morning kiddushes when there are no B’nai Mitvzah. As the need arises, Sisterhood is always ready to enhance the warm and hamish atmosphere at our shul.

Our Sisterhood Annual Membership dues are $25.00, part of which connects us to the Women’s League of Conservative Judaism.

Women’s League for Conservative Judaism is the network for all women who support our mission of enhancing Jewish knowledge, engaging in Jewish life, expanding communal involvement, and supporting klal Yisrael. It is for those who belong to affiliated sisterhoods and those who join directly. As an active arm of the Conservative / Masorti movement and the largest synagogue-based women’s organization worldwide, Women’s League provides service to thousands of women and hundreds of women’s groups.

Torah Fund of Women’s League:  Every woman has the opportunity to participate in preserving, promoting and perpetuating Conservative/Masorti Judaism through active giving to the Torah Fund Campaign of Women’s League in support of The Jewish Theological Seminary (New York, NY), Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies (Los Angeles, CA) and the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies (Jerusalem).

The Torah Fund campaign began in 1942 as a scholarship fund. In 1963, it merged with the Mathilde Schechter Residence Hall campaign that provided housing for undergraduate students. In time, the campaiagn identified needs and raised funds for specific projects, including:

  • Women’s League Educational Pavilion (Kripke Tower)
  • Women’s League Seminary Synagogue
  • Mathilde Schechter Residence Hall Renovations
  • Goldsmith Hall
  • Residence Hall at the American Jewish University
  • JTS Quadrangle
  • JTS Library Bookshelves
  • Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies Garden

For the past several years, funds raised by Torah Fund have gone toward scholarships to all the schools. There are continuing opportunities for sisterhoods and individuals to provide support to all four institutions through Torah Fund. Thousands of dedicated volunteers have contributed to the spiritual, esthetic and material well being of these educational communities by supporting Torah Fund projects.
